Farewell to Bead Trends

June 2013 Bead Trends, the final print issue.

The sad ending to a very special chapter of my life .........
and many other amazing artists I have been blessed to become friends with through Bead Trends, this beautiful jewelry table top magazine.

My love of Bead Trends came when I purchased my first copy in May of 2010.  I had began beading wire wrapped crosses the year before and shopped for beads in the big box stores. I was just learning more about beautiful beads in our local bead stores, especially Beads on Main here in Vacaville and a few art bead artists on Etsy.

I was in awe of the designs and photography in this magazine. I opened my Etsy shop February 2010 and began ordering ephemera tiles from Marie Noel Voyer Cramp of Calgary, Canada and boro glass from Amanda Cargill Austin of Florence, Oregon. In September of 2010 Marie was the Designer Highlight. I was a friend of a Designer Highlight, she was famous!! My new friends encouraged me to submit to Bead Trends that October for the March 2011 issue and patiently walked me through the process. I submitted a long ocean inspired necklace and was accepted. I was beyond thrilled.

That summer in July, my 60th birthday month I was the featured Designer Highlight. Amanda was the August featured Designer Highlight and we both received the news the same day back in January. We designed our pieces and shared the excitement and many other emotions during this time. We kept our secret and waited for our month. We made a big deal about it all summer and I began blogging each month about the current issue and a shout out about several of the other artists. This has been something I planned and looked forward to for over 2 1/2 years. I was published every month consecutively from March of 2011 to this last issue June of 2013. I missed only one month, last month and now I really regret that last fall 2012 my shows took my eye of the goal for the month of May.

This issue June 2013 is very special to us because my husband who has become a jewelry artist just a year ago and I have designs in this final print issue. I always talk about my design at the end of the blog post so I will get back to us in a bit. Please stay with me as I mention a few of the designers this month.

These stunning earrings made this last print cover, an artist that is new to me. Maggie Elizabeth Forlito. The Designer Highlight this month is Denise Peterson. Her "Bird of Flight"  necklace is gorgeous. Congratulations ladies.

Stop by and see several of my friends......
Cathy Obemma p. 14-15 "Anniversary Necklace" a beautiful tribute to her 37th anniversary this month.
Kristi Harrison p. 22-24 "Bee Kiss" Her memories of a bee sting as a child and beautiful necklace.
Wench Brennbakk p. 32-35 "Bleached Pink Flower" A really pretty romantic necklace and bracelet perfect for wedding month.
Erin Strother p. 40-41"What Lies Within" I can always spot Erin's work and the unique blending of textures.
Kari Asbury p.46 "Floral Earrings" also p. 80-81 "Paris" with Menagerie Studios mixed media charms.
Suzette Bentley p. 60-61 "Poppy" Love this hand tied necklace, with a vintage feeling.
Cindy Cima Edwards p. 96-97 "Restoration Rewind", A rich multi strand cuff bracelet.

Special mention to a couple more new artists to me Tammie Everly p. 100-101 "Antiquarian Paris" Love this focal!!
Dianna Shiraishi p. 102-105 "Vintage Ephemeral Botanical Set" Cool vintage dragonfly set. The pearl section for weddings is fantastic. p. 106-116

These awesome earrings by my husband Michael Fick p. 30-31 "Colorado" feature art bead head pins from our friend Raida Disbrow of Havana Beads. He forged the copper, the ear wires and custom connection with leather and Irish waxed linen into these amazing boho chic earrings.

Michael just started designing jewelry last May 2012 when he observed several of my lessons on hand forging connectors and clasps. I was a little intimidated by the new tools involved especially the torch and before I knew it Mike was inspired to begin sketching his own ideas and was ordering wire and a set of tools including Fretz hammers. He was published in San Francisco magazines in the 90s when he shot fashion photography and I encouraged him to submit to Bead Trends. This is his first published design in jewelry and he made the contents page!!

My Little Brown Bird......

My design p. 18-19 Little Brown Bird features a ceramic focal by Nan Emmett, a ceramic leaf bead and hand forged copper rings by Gaea, interesting Bayong, Horn and Tiger Cocoa beads and a Miss Fickle Media Clasp. I made a wire wrapped bead inspired by my local beading friend Leslie to give it a nest feeling. I combined leather to give it a natural organic feeling. I really like the textures in this necklace.

Finally Tatia Meyer the amazing editor of Bead Trends. I have loved submitting my designs to her. She was so easy to work with and I anxiously awaited each month hoping the designs I submitted would be accepted. I never took it for granted and submitted more than she was able to accept. It was like a gift each month when that email came and then my box with my two copies and my jewelry were returned. I will miss this magazine and I thank the staff and the owners of Northridge Publishing for such an amazing collection of artists and their best designs. It has opened doors for art bead designers, jewelry designers and many friends to have something to share. look forward too and be inspired. It just reminds us everything changes.

Thank you Tatia!! We wish you the best!!

Michael and I have set up 3 rooms in our home to design our jewelry. We are preparing for several juried Art shows in Northern CA throughout the next few months. It's Bead Trends time again!!

April Bead Trends 2013.............

This is an exiting month for me to share with you. My friend Marie Noel Voyer-Cramp has a beautiful bracelet on the cover this month. "Early Night Sky" is a perfect for spring and Easter.  She chose beads from one of our favorite bead makers, Gaea, and a handmade clasp I would love a closer look at from the very talented designer Leslie Watt.
April 2013 Bead Trends
Marie, has faced one of the toughest challenges this year in fighting breast cancer. She has 4 beautiful children and everything to live for, as her fight continues this is a wonderful way to celebrate the completion of her therapy.

Marie and Amanda Cargil Austin encouraged me to submit to Bead Trends several years ago and it has been very special for all of us to see our designs featured in this magazine. Making the cover is a thrill all three of us have experienced. Congratulations Marie, this was a very special month for you.

My friend Kristin Oppold is the featured Designer Highlight on pages 49-63. Kristin has an amazing design style. She has a way with taking you on a journey with her textures and pieces of stone and other components.  Its fair to say she will capture your imagination. Her work has recently made the television series "The Vampire Diaries".  I think my favorite this month is "Beach Urchin" on page 50-51. Read all about Kristin and check her shop out at YaY jewelry on Etsy. Love that name, YaY!! Kristin lost her mom this past year to cancer and I know she is smiling down on your success my friend.

Cindy Cima Edwards "Turquoise dream" on page 76-77.  My favorite summer color combo. I love the toggle on this one. Cindy has been featured  in every spring beading magazine I have seen this year. Congratulations to Cindy, that is quite an accomplishment!!
Patti Pruhs " Ooh LaLa...Paris, p. 78-79 a great little romantic Paris necklace. Patti is a new designer to me.
Kari Asbury "Woodland Daisies p. 88-89 This is a neat treatment with the daisy connector.
Wench Brennbakk "Golden Crystals" p. 112- 113. This one has the wow factor. Very elegant, and a gorgeous clasp.

My design this month
Rushing Spring River

My Rushing Spring River on page 14-15 was photographed really beautifully this month. A special thank you to the staff at Bead Trends for always making our designs shine.

The pendant cobalt, teal and peach leaves in the water. This is designed by the very talented Lisa Boucher of Clayworks NH on Etsy. I believe this is my 2nd Bead Trends design featuring Lisa's pendant. I accented this piece with ceramic beads by Gaea, and Golem designs. Miss Fickle Media patina ring for the focal, chain and the toggle clasp. Many of you know I love working with art beads and components and these lovely ladies, well they inspire me and my designs every day.

I also love being inspired by nature. Naming my jewelry does not always come easy to me. The name for this necklace came as I designed around this pendant and thought of our childhood trips to the mountains in southern CA and crisp rivers rushing by from the snow melt.

Mark your calendar for Saturday March 13th. I am participating in Lori Anderson's 7th Bead Soup Blog Party. I received a large soup mix from my partner Tania Spivey and I designed a whole collection over the course of the last month. I am excited to share with you how many ways I became inspired by just keeping the ingredients in a little tray right beside my work area. I added many of my own beads and it was an interesting process so please stop by and comment. Everything will be listed in my shop that  Saturday as well.

There will be all sorts of inspiration with a list of all the other artists blogs to visit. So grab your beverage of choice and join us.

Thanks so much for stopping by, I always love your comments and I know how busy we all can be so it means a lot to me. This necklace will be listed in my shop soon. I have been busy working on several collections for my shop and summer shows and will be listing many new items in the coming weeks. So many ideas so many hours in the day.....

Bead Trends March 2013....A special issue for me.

Flash back March issue of Bead Trends 2011......

I'll never forget the feeling when I received the e-mail from Tatia, the amazing Editor of Bead Trends in September for the October call. I was accepted for one of my designs published in this prestigious  magazine.

My friends Amanda Cargill Austin and Marie Noel Voyer-Cramp had encouraged me to submit to Bead Trends. It was a magazine I had admired when I first started beading and the thought was a bit intimidating but exciting all the same. My "Hope" necklace was an ocean inspired art bead necklace.

When I look back at that, my style was already beginning to come together as I loved nature, especially the beach. I loved beautiful beads and Vintaj Brass. I still have this necklace in my studio as a reminder of where it all began.

Just a few months later I was the featured Designer Highlight in July of 2011,  and my friend Amanda was the Designer Highlight for August. We got the notice on the same day and shared the journey during those months creating our designs and helping each other promote our news. July issue was especially exciting because it was my 60th birthday month.

My cover in November 2011, with my necklace Fierenza. I have a picture at Barnes and Noble holding this one. I began the tradition of writing a blog post each month and sharing some of the designers in each monthly issue. I love to see what my friends and other artists I have not met yet create. I love to share this with you. So here goes.

Fast forward to this month March 2012.......

Starting with the cover this month Wenche Brennbakk, one of my favorite designers has a beautiful green necklace. I love the shades of green and the layers in this piece. I think it would be stunning.

My friend and super talented designer Erin Prais-Hintz shows us how to make memory wire turn into a piece of art. p. 40-41. I have never worked with memory wire before and this week, I just got a spinner and some peanut and seed beads and tried to make a few bracelets with some cute charms to go with some stack bracelets in my summer collections. These were inspired by ABSB. Well, I am here to say that stuff is tough!! The spinner, well there must be a trick to holding the wire just right. Check out Erin's design and see what other possibility's there can be.

Kristy Abner p. 42-43 has a fun boho necklace "Fleur-De -Lis-Spice"in great colors of turquoise and coral. I love the focal on this one.

Kari Asbury p. 80-81 "Peace Daisy" in yellow and aqua blue, fun and whimsical.
Jean Wells p. 82-83 "Turquoise Owl". Lots of texture and interesting beads as it takes you on a journey around the necklace.
The Designer Highlight this month is Sherri Welser. Her first piece on p. 46 looks like a delicious bowl of summer berries. I especially loved her "Victoriana" necklace, p 52-53. The treatment around the focal is very interesting and elegant.
Jennifer Hildebrant p. 56-57 and Penny Neville p. 58-59 show the same focal from Classic Bead in two totally different interpretations. How fun is that? I love the pink patina chain and toggle from one of my favorite artists Shannon at Miss Fickle Media.

My design this month, Pretty Posies on p. 104-105

This necklace is designed with ceramic beads by some of my favorite art beads designers designers Gaea, Miss Fickle Media and Havana Beads. I love the photography this month. It shows all the beads and design so beautifully. You can see the similarities to my first Hope necklace.

What a thrill to be in this magazine 24 consecutive months. My dad would be so proud. He was the type of guy that had us on a pedestal but rarely told us how proud he was. He always told everyone else of our accomplishments. I hope I can be an influence to my 7 grandchildren that if I can do it, anything is possible.

You can read about my past blog posts each month in my archives on this blog.

Be sure to pick up your copy on news stands now, there are many more inspiring designs.  Thank you Tatia Meyer and your amazing staff for making my designs look so good every month.

As always thank you for stopping by and please leave me a comment and share this post. This is a special issue for me and I appreciate the opportunity to share.
